Thanks
to a pair of clutch free throws, Cedar Rapids Washington's Kaitlin Armstrong is
getting a final chance to help her team win a state championship.
Armstrong's
two free throws with 13.7 seconds left in overtime gave No. 8 Washington a
three-point lead that stood up in a 54-51 victory over top-ranked Waukee in
Friday's Class 4A semifinals.
The win sends Washington (22-2)
to the finals for the sixth time in 10 state tournament appearances and the
Warriors will see a familiar foe in the title game at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Iowa City High, one of
Washington's Mississippi Valley Conference rivals, reached the championship
game for the first time with a 55-39 victory over Linn-Mar in the other 4A
semifinal. Washington beat City High 66-52 in the final game of the regular
season.
Armstrong led Washington with 18
points and Katelin Oney scored 14. Both have signed to play at Northern Iowa
next season. Micha Mims scored eight points for Washington and Camille
Marie-Lidd made a big contribution with six points and 12 rebounds.
Armstrong was on Washington teams
that lost in the 2006 championship game and last year's semifinals. Oney and
Mims also played on those teams, as well as the 2005 Washington team that lost
in the state finals.
Washington won state titles in
1988 and 1995.
Reserve Tia Dawson scored only
two points for Washington but made one of the biggest plays of the game,
drawing a charging foul on Waukee's Andi Waugaman with three seconds left in
regulation and the score tied at 47. Waugaman had scored on a perfectly
executed pick-and-roll that would have given Waukee the lead, but the offensive
foul wiped out the basket.
Armstrong missed a long 3-point
shot at the buzzer and the game went into overtime.
Washington went ahead to stay at
51-49 when Oney scored inside with a minute to play. Marie-Lidd added a free
throw with 36.7 seconds remaining to make it 52-49 and Washington held on.
Staci Gillum led Waukee (22-2)
with 17 points. Megan Storjohann added 12 points and 12 rebounds and Megan Hogg
scored 10. Waukee's only other loss was a one-pointer to 11th-ranked Dowling
Catholic at mid-season. Waukee avenged that loss in the first round of the
state tournament.
