Iowa City High and Linn-Mar will meet again, this time on a much bigger stage.

Eighth-ranked City High got a strong game from Iowa recruit Kelly Krei and used a big fourth quarter to beat No. 7 Cedar Falls 52-40 in the first round of the Class 4A tournament.

The victory sends City (20-3) into a semifinal game at 1 p.m. Friday against Mississippi Valley Conference rival Linn-Mar. City and third-ranked Linn-Mar split two regular season games, each winning on the other's floor.

Linn-Mar looked impressive in beating sixth-ranked Des Moines Roosevelt 66-38 in its first-round game.

Cedar Falls had won 16 straight coming in, a streak that included a 57-54 overtime victory over City.

Krei came through with a double-double for the Little Hawks, scoring 20 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. She scored 13 in the second-half and was in the middle of a 14-0 run that erased a one-point Cedar Falls lead and finally broke it open.

Krei started the burst with a 3-pointer from the right side, her second basket of the game from long range. The Little Hawks then stole the ball on the next three Cedar Falls possessions and each steal led to a basket.

Freshman Virginia Johnson hit a 10-footer in the lane, Kim Rickels nailed a 3 from the right wing, then fed Majesty Tutson for a layup on an inbounds play. Two free throws each by Kenzie Skay and Krei finished the run and put City High ahead 49-36 with 1:16 left.

The game was tight for the first three quarters, with the lead changing hands 10 times before City went ahead for good. Before that, the Little Hawks never led by more than four points and Cedar Falls was never ahead by more than two.

Sophomore Laura Johnson led Cedar Falls with 16 points and nine rebounds. Ali Hines added nine points for the Tigers (19-5).

Johnson, a lanky 6-foot-1 post player, who looks to have a lot of potential, finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and two blocks.
