Springville ended its first state tournament trip in the
best way possible.
Getting a big game from all-tournament captain Katie
Eiben, the sixth-ranked Orioles held off Newell-Fonda 67-60 Friday night to win
the Class 1A title.
The championship tops off a 25-3 season for
Springville, which has come a long way under seventh-year coach Brian
O'Donnell. The Orioles went 0-22 in his first season at the school.
And this might not be the last state tournament fans
see of this Springville team -- or Newell-Fonda for that matter. Neither team
has a senior.
Eiben, a 6-foot junior, led all scorers with 26
points, grabbed 10 rebounds and made five of six free throws late in the game
to help Springville secure the victory.
Callie Kloubec added 10 points and 13 rebounds for the
Orioles, while Sarah Davidson had nine points, nine rebounds and a key block.
Unranked Newell-Fonda (23-4) had been impressive in
its first two state tournament games, scoring 80 and 81 points. The Mustangs
ran into a taller opponent in this one, but they kept threatening until the
end.
Springville had a 48-26 rebounding edge and a 36-16
advantage in points in the paint.
Susan Kies and Alisa Christensen led Newell-Fonda with
14 points each and Rachel Culp scored eight to go with six rebounds, three
assists and two steals. Christensen had five steals.
Springville kept threatening to break it open, taking
leads of 11 points in the first half and 13 in the third and fourth quarters.
But the Mustangs came back each time.
A 7-0 run drew Newell-Fonda to 57-51 with under three
minutes to play and they had a chance to cut the lead to three. But Davidson
blocked Ellen Gruntorad's 3-point shot and Springville hit five free throws --
four by Eiben -- to stretch its lead to 62-51.
Newell-Fonda charged back one more time, drawing to
65-60 on Kies' free throw with 15.2 seconds to play. Davidson then made two
final free throws to finish it off.
Davidson, Kies and Culp joined Eiben on the
all-tournament team, which also had Jennifer Jorgensen of Southeast
Webster-Grand and Kayla Waskow of Dunkerton.
