Lawton-Bronson
is heading back to the Class 1A semifinals.
Alyssa
Brockhaus scored 20 points and the second-ranked Eagles were impressive from
start to finish in rolling past 10th-ranked Exira 80-48 in Monday's opening
round.
Lawton-Bronson (23-3) won for the
17th straight time and will play again Wednesday night. The Eagles have an
all-senior starting lineup and returned everyone from last year's team, which
lost to IKM in the semis.
Katie Sorensen had 17 points, six
steals and five assists for Lawton-Bronson, while Mandy Wagner scored 14 and
Katelyn Brockhaus 10.
Sophomore Hallie Christofferson,
who already is drawing interest from Division I college programs, led Exira
(21-3) with 24 points and 12 rebounds. Christofferson showed some slick post
moves in making eight of 11 shots. She also hit all eight of her free throws.
Exira led 15-12 late in the first
quarter before Lawton-Bronson took over.
The Eagles scored the next 12
points and led the rest of the way. Sorensen had eight points in that stretch,
including a pair of 3-pointers.
Lawton-Bronson built a 44-30
halftime lead, then opened the second half with a 17-3 run to put it out of
reach.
This is the first time in the
state tournament that two Class 1A teams have scored 80 points. Newell-Fonda
beat Southeast Webster-Grand 80-75 in Monday's first game.
The state tournament was divided
into four classes in 1994.
