Newell-Fonda is taking its youth to the semifinals of
the Class 1A state tournament.
The Mustangs hit a flurry of 3-pointers during the
middle part of the game and sophomore Susan Kies hit a couple of key baskets late
in an 80-75 victory over fifth-ranked Southeast Webster-Grand in the
tournament's opening game.
Southeast Webster-Grand got a big effort from state
scoring leader Jennifer Jorgensen, who scored 34 points in her final high
school game and finishes second on the state's career list. Jorgensen also had
13 rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
But balance, quick hands and long-range shooting made
the difference for the Mustangs (22-3), who start three juniors and two
sophomores and do not have a senior on the team.
Kies led Newell-Fonda with 23 points. Reserve Ellen
Gruntorad added 15 on five 3-point baskets, Katelyn Laursen scored 12 and
Lauren Devereaux 10.
Michelle Pals scored 15 for Southeast Webster-Grand
(21-5) and Morgan Hansen scored 13.
The combined 155 points were the most ever in a 1A
tournament game and the third-highest total in regulation play in any
five-player state tourney game. The five-player tournament started in 1985.
Newell-Fonda finished 10-for-26 on 3-pointers and made
18 steals.
During one stretch in the first half, six of the
Mustangs' seven baskets were 3-pointers. The Mustangs added three more baskets
from beyond the arc in the third quarter and Gruntorad added a final 3 in the
fourth quarter after Southeast Webster-Grand had rallied to take the lead.
After trailing by as many as 15 points in the third
quarter, Southeast Webster-Grand put together an 11-0 run to take a 62-60 lead
when Jorgensen tipped away a pass and drove the length of the court for a
layup.
Newell-Fonda came back with nine straight points, a
run that Gruntorad capped with her fifth 3, and the Mustangs led the rest of
the way. Kies made a layup with 1:34 to play and hit a pull-up jumper with just
under a minute to go to help secure the victory.
Jorgensen
finishes her career with 2,708 points. Former Rock Valley star Deb Remmerde is
the leader with 2,756. Jorgensen also finishes fourth in career rebounds
(1,184) and fifth in assists (621).
