Des Moines Roosevelt's Morgan Hamner will get a chance to experience something she missed out on last year -- playing in the state championship game.

Hamner scored 11 of her 20 points in the second half to help defending champion Roosevelt beat Cedar Rapids Washington 61-53 in the Class 4A semifinals.

Hamner missed last year's tournament because of torn knee ligaments, but she was a major force in helping the second-ranked Roughriders (23-2) get back to the title game.

Working on the low block, the 6-foot-2 junior made nine of 11 shots and started a decisive 10-2 fourth-quarter run with two straight layups.

Charmaine Bell added 17 points, 10 rebounds and seven assists for Roosevelt, while McKenya Johnson also had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Emma Van Vinkle contributed six rebounds, five blocks and four assists.

Kaitlin Oney led third-ranked Washington (22-3) with 16 points, Kaitlin Armstrong scored 12 and Mikaela Fisher 10. Armstrong, Micha Mims and Andrea Freeman each had three steals for the Warriors, while Sierra Williams grabbed six rebounds to go with six points.

Roosevelt beat Washington 53-28 in last year's championship game, but their rematch was a close, hard-fought battle throughout.

Washington bothered Roosevelt with a full-court press and led by as many as five in the first half. After five lead changes, Roosevelt went ahead to stay at 34-32 on Van Winkle's two free throws with 1:06 left in the first half.

The Roughriders went up by six early in the second half, but couldn't shake the Warriors until midway through the fourth quarter. With Roosevelt leading 47-46, Hamner got the first of her two straight layups and the Roughriders went to open a 57-48 lead with 1:18 remaining.

Johnson also had two layups in the run, on nice passes from Van Winkle and Bell, and Ashley Tindrell finished it with two free throws. That was enough of a cushion for the Roughriders to hold off the Warriors at the end.
