Defending state champion Des Moines Roosevelt is off
to a sizzling start in the Class 4A tournament.
Morgan Hamner scored 21 points and second-ranked
Roosevelt shot 60 percent in beating No. 9 Iowa City High 61-26 in the
quarterfinals.
Charmaine Bell turned in a solid all-around game for
the Roughriders (22-2), finishing with 13 points, 10 assists and seven
rebounds. Several of those assists came on sharp passes to Hamner, who worked
inside to hit nine of 13 shots.
McKenya Johnson added 10 points for Roosevelt and Emma
Van Vinkle blocked nine shots, matching the fourth-best total in state
tournament history.
Sarah Anciaux led City High (19-6) with nine points.
Kelly Krei added seven points and seven rebounds.
Roosevelt let just 5-4 a little more than 3 minutes
into the game, then went on a 16-2 run to go up 21-6 at the end of the first
quarter. Bell got the first basket in that run with a steal and layup, then
finished it with a 3-pointer and a runner in the lane at the buzzer.
The Roughriders led 38-14 at halftime, then had a 12-0
run in the third quarter to stretch their lead to 50-18.
Roosevelt will play the Ames-Cedar Rapids Washington
winner in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Friday.
