Defending state champion Des Moines Roosevelt is off to a sizzling start in the Class 4A tournament.

Morgan Hamner scored 21 points and second-ranked Roosevelt shot 60 percent in beating No. 9 Iowa City High 61-26 in the quarterfinals.

Charmaine Bell turned in a solid all-around game for the Roughriders (22-2), finishing with 13 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds. Several of those assists came on sharp passes to Hamner, who worked inside to hit nine of 13 shots.

McKenya Johnson added 10 points for Roosevelt and Emma Van Vinkle blocked nine shots, matching the fourth-best total in state tournament history.

Sarah Anciaux led City High (19-6) with nine points. Kelly Krei added seven points and seven rebounds.

Roosevelt let just 5-4 a little more than 3 minutes into the game, then went on a 16-2 run to go up 21-6 at the end of the first quarter. Bell got the first basket in that run with a steal and layup, then finished it with a 3-pointer and a runner in the lane at the buzzer.

The Roughriders led 38-14 at halftime, then had a 12-0 run in the third quarter to stretch their lead to 50-18.

Roosevelt will play the Ames-Cedar Rapids Washington winner in the semifinals at 1 p.m. Friday.
