Spirit Lake beat the No. 1 team and now has its sights
on another goal -- a state championship.
Jodi Gerking hit a key 3-pointer, then sank six
straight free throws in the final minute to secure the fourth-ranked Indians'
62-49 victory over previously unbeaten Decorah.
Spirit Lake (26-1) won for the 24th straight time and
will go for its first state title on Saturday night. Decorah finishes 25-1.
The Indians got off to a fast start and never trailed
after the first three minutes. They made nine of their first 12 shots,
including three 3-pointers, shot 59 percent in the first half and 50 percent
for the game.
And every time Decorah started to make a run, Spirit
Lake answered with a couple of baskets.
Kaisha Brown led Spirit Lake with 16 points, Gerking
finished with 15 and Amber Kirschbaum added 14. Kirschbaum also grabbed 10
rebounds, blocked four shots and made two steals.
Rachel Madrigal turned in her usual solid performance
and led Decorah with 18 points. Bethany Van Sloten added 10 points for the
Vikings and Samantha Jewell scored nine.
Spirit Lake got a big lift when Chrissy Stettnichs hit
a 30-foot 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer to give the Indians a 46-36
lead. But Decorah wasn't shaken and began the fourth quarter with a 10-2 run,
cutting the to 48-46 on Jewell's two free throws.
That was as close as it would get. Kirschbaum hit a
turnaround shot and Gerking swished her 3 from the left corner, making it 53-46
with 3:23 remaining. After Decorah's Chelsea Humpal sank two free throws,
Stettnichs converted a three-point play off a baseline drive and Gerking
started her free throw spree to finish it off.
