Graettinger-Terril prevailed in an overtime thriller
and now the Knights are headed for the Class 1A championship game.
Theresa Petersen swished a 3-pointer to force overtime
and Lexy Determan made a layup for the go-ahead basket in the extra session,
lifting the 12th-ranked Knights to a 45-41 victory over WCLT in a battle of Cornbelt Conference
rivals.
Petersen led Graettinger-Terril with 17 points,
including four 3-pointers, and Megan Torkelson scored 14 to go with four
assists. Stacey Schutjer led 14th-ranked WCLT with 20 points and Alyssa
Schwartz added nine.
Graettinger-Terril, in the tournament for the first
time as a consolidated school, will take a 25-2 record into Friday night's
title game. WCLT finishes 25-2, with both losses to Graettinger-Terril.
Graettinger-Terril won the regular-season game 38-32.
Graettinger-Terril rallied after trailing by as many
as seven points in the second half. The Knights trailed 39-36 when Petersen got
the ball in the right corner and nailed a well-defended 3 with 1:31 remaining.
A charging foul gave the ball back to
Graettinger-Terril, but the Knights missed three shots at the end, with
Schwartz blocking the final attempt.
After a WCLT turnover in the overtime, Torkelson drove
into the lane and fed Determan for a layup that made it 41-39. Torkelson's two
free throws put the Knights up by four and they held on, Laura Laidig securing
the victory with two free throws with 9.7 seconds remaining.
