Des
Moines Roosevelt gave the city a long-awaited state championship.
The
fifth-ranked Roughriders combined tough defense with the sparkling play of
Charmaine Bell and MyKenya Johnson to beat No. 7 Cedar Rapids Washington 53-28
Saturday for the Class 4A title.
It's
the first state championship in the five-player game for a Des Moines school.
The only other school from Des Moines to win a state title was East, which
claimed the six-player crown in 1979.
Johnson
led Roosevelt with 18 points and seven rebounds and was named to the
all-tournament team. She scored 11 in the fourth quarter, finished 6-for-8 from
the field and made all six of her free throws.
Bell,
the all-tournament captain, turned in a solid all-around game with 15 points,
eight assists, seven rebounds and two steals.
Katelin
Oney's 10 points led Washington, the state runner-up for the second straight
year.
Roosevelt
survived an early flurry by Washington that produced a 7-2 lead for the
Warriors. The Roughriders buckled down on defense and gave up only two more
field goals in the rest of the half and just eight in the game.
Ahead
32-22 after three quarters, Roosevelt concentrated on getting the ball inside
to Johnson and she delivered. The 5-foot-11 junior converted a three-point play
off an inside basket, scored two more baskets inside, including one on a slick
spinning move, and sank four more free throws.
Her
final two free throws made it 47-25 and Roosevelt coasted to the finish.
The
Roughriders, who made their third consecutive trip to the state tournament,
finished 22-4. Washington closed with a 21-5 record.
Margo
Muhlbauer of Class 1A champion Manilla IKM was named the tournament's overall
MVP.
