A big
second-half run sent second-ranked Norwalk to the Class 3A semifinals.
The
Warriors scored 14 straight points to open a 17-point lead and went on to beat
seventh-ranked Decorah 56-43 on Tuesday.
Norwalk
had good balance in its offense. Kelsey Cermak led the Warriors with 13 points
and seven rebounds, while Hannah Noel and Jessica Fraser each scored 12.
Noel
handed out five assists and made five steals. Fraser had a perfect shooting
day, going 5-for-5 from the field and 2-for-2 at the line.
Rachel
Madrigal led Decorah with 15 points. She also had six rebounds, four assists,
four blocks and three steals. Samantha Jewell had nine points and nine rebounds
for the Vikings.
Decorah
trailed just 30-27 after Madrigal's layup early in the third quarter. Norwalk's
Krista Walker then hit back-to-back 3-pointers and the Warriors went on the
score the final 12 points of the quarter.
When Cermak got a basket inside to
start to the fourth quarter, the Warriors led 44-27. Decorah chopped the lead
to four with a little more than 2 minutes to play, but Norwalk's Betsy Hildreth
hit a jumper and the Warriors sank seven of eight free throws to close it out.
Hildreth
finished with eight points, while Walker scored nine on 3-for-5 3-point shooting.
Norwalk is
now 24-2 and will play defending state champion Cedar Rapids Xavier at 6:30
p.m. on Thursday. Decorah finishes 21-4.
