Ida Grove
won two state championships in the 1920s. Now the combined Battle Creek-Ida
Grove program will get its chance.
Kelsey
Bolte's 26 points and steady free throw shooting in the fourth quarter lifted
Battle Creek-Ida Grove to a 60-47 victory over Audubon in the Class 2A
semifinals Thursday.
The fifth-ranked Falcons, who
have an all-junior starting lineup, won for the 27th time in 28 games and will
play No. 3 North Butler in the championship game at 8:30 p.m. Friday.
Bolte also led her team with nine
rebounds, sank two 3-pointers and went 10-for-10 at the free throw line. Gabi
Miller added 13 points and seven rebounds for the winners, Shelby Schmidt had
nine points and Crystal Schiembeck contributed five points and four assists.
Kati Jo Christensen led Audubon
with 20 points and Jodi Best scored 12. The unranked Wheelers finished 20-7.
Audubon upset No. 1-ranked
Davenport Assumption in the first round and had a six-point lead early in the
second half of this one.
The Falcons erased that lead with
a 7-0 run, then scored the final seven points of the third quarter to take the
lead for good at 43-38. Bolte capped that run when she grabbed an offensive
rebound and hit a follow shot in the middle of the lane at the buzzer.
After Bolte drove for a basket to
start the fourth quarter, Battle Creek-Ida Grove scored the rest of its points
on free throws. The Falcons went 15-for-18 at the line to stay in control.
Bolte hit six straight during that stretch and Schmidt was 4-for-4.
