Audubon
pulled off a shocker.
The unranked Wheelers settled down after
falling behind early and upset No. 1 Davenport Assumption 72-66 in the Class 2A
quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Audubon took the lead for good
midway through the third quarter and kept making the plays it needed to stay
ahead. Kati Jo Christensen led the Wheelers with 28 points and 12 rebounds and
hit one of the biggest shots of the game.
Christensen got the ball on the right
side of the floor after Assumption had just cut the lead to 54-53 early in the
fourth quarter. She then backed up behind the 3-point line and buried the shot,
starting a 6-0 run that stretched the lead to 60-53.
That cushion proved to be enough. After
Christensen got a bucket inside, the Wheelers made 10 of 14 free throws to
secure their victory.
Audubon will take a 20-6 record
into a semifinal game at 2:30 p.m. Thursday against fifth-ranked Battle
Creek-Ida Grove. Assumption finishes 24-2.
Jodi Best added 21 points and
eight assists for Audubon, while Brittany Denker had 13 points and six
rebounds.
Olivia Hansen had a strong game
for Assumption, finishing with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Gabbie Binion also
had a double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. Kim Thissen scored 12 points
for the Knights and blocked three shots.
