AGWSR's Kari Mutschler was almost
perfect.
Led by Mutschler's 23 points and
11 rebounds, the second-ranked Cougars beat Solon 67-48 in a Class 2A game
Monday night to complete the opening day of the state tournament.
Mutschler is a 6-foot junior
who's strong around the basket. She made eight of nine shots from the field and
was 7-for-9 at the free throw line to help AGWSR stay unbeaten.
Mindy Hutchcroft added 12 points
for the Cougars and Meredith Stensland scored 10. Jessica McDowell helped out
with 10 rebounds and seven points, while point guard Kristen Rasmussen had five
points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists.
Solon made a run at AGWSR after
trailing by 20 points midway through the third quarter. Kelsey Kidwell's four
3-pointers helped the Lady Spartans cut the lead to 48-38 early in the fourth
quarter. Mutschler then converted a three-point play off an offensive rebound
to start a 9-2 run that put the Cougars back in control.
Kidwell finished with five
3-pointers and led Solon with 18 points. Chelsea Tanner added 12 points on
4-for-5 shooting from 3-point range.
AGWSR is now 26-0 and moves into
a semifinal game against third-ranked North Butler at 1 p.m. Thursday. Solon,
in the state tournament for the first time since winning the title in 1998,
closed the season at 18-9.
