State tournament trips are becoming
routine for Treynor. The Cardinals are in for the 11th time in 12 years and now
they're headed for the Class 1A semifinals after beating Fairfield Maharishi
50-37 on Monday.
Treynor's Chehala Pace made the most
of the 22 minutes she played, scoring 16 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to
lead the third-ranked Cardinals. Lea Hartigan had 11 points and six rebounds,
while Anna Waymaster had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Tricia Trotter had a strong floor
game for Treynor with nine assists, nine rebounds and three steals.
Treynor took a 5-2 lead on Hartigan's
3-pointer at the 6:28 mark in the first quarter and was ahead the rest of the
way. After Maharishi cut the lead to seven in the second quarter, Treynor scored
the final five points of the period to go up 30-18 at halftime. The Cardinals
stayed ahead by double figures the rest of the way.
Maharishi played in the state tournament for the first
time. Bonnie Carter and Amelia Freeberg led the Pioneers with 11 points each.
University of Vermont recruit Sofia Iwobi added nine points, 13 rebounds, four
assists and four blocks.
Treynor improves to 25-1 and will
play defending state champion Charter Oak-Ute at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Maharishi
finishes with a 19-6 record.
