Get ready for a rematch
in the Class 5A championship game.
It will be Southeast Polk-Dowling
Catholic, Part II, at 8 p.m. Saturday after both advanced with semifinal
victories over higher ranked opponents.
No. 9 Southeast Polk,
the defending champion, knocked off third-ranked Waterloo West 54-46.
Fifth-ranked Dowling Catholic then shook off a sluggish start to stun
top-ranked Iowa City High 49-44, handing the Little Hawks their first loss.
Dowling Catholic trailed
13-2 before turning up its defense and climbing back into it behind sophomore Becca Hittner and junior Aubrey
Faber. Hittner finished with 19 points and seven
rebounds while going against City High star Haley Lorenzen.
Faber added 14 points, six rebounds and six assists and Marin Daniel chipped in
with seven points.
Kiera Washpun, who scored 31
points in a first-round victory over Cedar Rapids Kennedy, led City High with
15 points and Courtney Joens scored 14 with eight
steals. Lorenzen,
who'll play at Florida next season, finished an outstanding high school career
with eight points and 11 rebounds.
Dowling Catholic trailed
by as many as 12 points before closing the first half with seven straight
points to trail 23-18 at the break. City High stayed ahead well into the second
half before the Maroons hit the Little Hawks with an 11-0 run to go up 41-36. Hittner finished that burst by taking a pass from Faber on
a nice cut to the basket and banking in a layup.
Hayden Butler's two free
throws put Dowling Catholic up 45-38 with 1:04 left and the Maroons soon were
headed for their rematch with Southeast Polk, which beat Dowling Catholic 43-34
in last year's title game.
Dowling Catholic ran its
usual efficient offense and took only 32 shots, making 15. The Maroons were
even more efficient at the free throw line, sinking 15 of 16, including six
straight in the final 64 seconds.
Dowling Catholic is now
22-3 and will be going for its fifth title. City High, the 2008 state champion,
finishes 24-1.
