Carlisle's remarkable
comeback season will go on for at least one more game.
The sixth-ranked
Wildcats rallied from an early 14-point deficit to stun No. 4 Dallas
Center-Grimes 53-48 in a first-round Class 4A game. It was a dramatic reversal
to the first game between the two, a 62-27 Dallas Center-Grimes victory in
Carlisle's third game of the season.
Carlisle is now 20-6
under first-year coach Bryan White after going 1-22 last season. The Wildcats
will play top-ranked Harlan in a semifinal game at 6:45 p.m. Thursday.
Carlisle had to scramble
from behind the entire game, trailing 16-2 in the first quarter and 25-12 midway through the second quarter. A 15-4 run got the
Wildcats back into the game, and they took their first lead at 48-46 on
freshman Agatha Beier's putback
with 2:43 left.
After a Carlisle steal,
Payton Keeny scored on an inbounds play to make it
50-46 with 1:26 remaining and the Wildcats held on, allowing only one basket
after Dallas Center-Grimes scored with 4 1/2 minutes left.
Keeney led Carlisle with
12 points. Beier, the team's point guard, had 11
points, eight assists, seven rebounds and three steals. Mary Grace Wachel scored 10 points and Shelbie
Curry nine, including two 3-pointers to keep the Wildcats within striking
distance in the fourth quarter.
Dani Heritage led Dallas Center-Grimes with 15
points, Allison O'Brien scored seven and Jackie Peyton six in the second big
matchup between the two schools in state tournament play. Dallas Center-Grimes
beat Carlisle 5-2 to win the 4A softball title last summer.
Carlisle now has won 19
of 21 games after losing four of its first five. Dallas Center-Grimes finishes 21-3.
