Before this year, Orange
City Unity Christian had never won a game at the state basketball tournament.
Now, the sixth-ranked Knights
will play for a state championship.
Sophomore Anna Kiel had 20 points
and 13 rebounds and Kassidy DeJong
scored 16 to lead Unity Christian past No. 2 Crestwood 50-41 in the Class 3A
semifinals.
After going 0-for-3 in its first
three state tournament trips, the Knights will take a 22-4 record into the
championship game at 4 p.m. Saturday.
Kiel, a 6-foot sophomore, had 18
points and nine rebounds in the first half to help the Knights build a 29-24
lead. Then they fought off Crestwood during the second half to punch their
ticket to the finals.
Crestwood pulled into a tie at 34
on Tessa Anderson's 3-pointer with 1:45 left in the third quarter and seemed to
have some momentum.
But Chanda
Zomermaand hit a 3-pointer and folowed
that with a driving, double-pump layup for a 39-34 lead heading into the fourth
quarter. Those were Zomermaand's only points of the
game and they were critical.
Unity finally salted the game
away after Crestwood drew to 41-38 early in the fourth quarter. DeJong got loose for her third 3-pointer of the game,
starting a 9-0 run that stretched the lead to 50-38. Kiel followed the 3 with a
bucket inside, then hit DeJong
with a nice pass for a layup.
Kiel went 7-for-11 from the field
and blocked four shots while DeJong handed out seven
assists.
Crestwood, which also had a 0-3 tourney record before this year, finishes 22-3. Savannah
Lentz led the Cadets with 13 points, Madison Sickles scored 11 and Andersono had five points and nine rebounds.
