Mediapolis once was one of the state's most successful teams in six-player basketball. Now, the Bullettes have a victory in the five-player state tournament to celebrate.

Rachel Holsteen and Andrea Larson each made nine of 10 shots to lead fourth-ranked Mediapolis past No. 5 Williamsburg 61-43 to close out the opening round of Class 3A play. It was Mediapolis' first game at state in the five-player era.

Holsteen, the team's only senior, scored 21 points and Larson added 18 as the Bullettes improved to 24-1 and avenged a loss to Williamsburg in last year's regional semifinals.

Darby Massner had 10 points for Mediapolis, while Heidi Hillyard, who has committed to Northern Iowa, had six points and 13 rebounds.

Drake recruit Paige Greiner led Williamsburg with 20 points on 10-for-16 shooting. Tina Lane added eight points for the Raiders, who rallied from 18 down to beat Mediapolis 66-60 in overtime in that regional game a year ago.

Williamsburg again fell behind by double digits, but there was no rally this time.

Mediapolis, which shot 56 percent for the game, raced to a 32-18 halftime lead and was up 49-28 after three quarters. When Greiner began the fourth quarter with two straight buckets to cut the lead to 17, Mediapolis answered with two layups by Holsteen and a jumper by Larson to quell any Raider hopes of a comeback.

Mediapolis, which made 12 consecutive state tournament appearances from the mid-1960s to the mid-'70s, will face top-ranked MOC-Floyd Valley in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Thursday. This the Bullettes' 22nd appearance overall and first since 1987.

Williamsburg, in the tournament for the third time, finishes 22-3.
