Colo-NESCO made the plays it needed just in time to
win the opening game of the 2014 state tournament.
Caitlyn
Riese scored the go-ahead points near the end and
Madison Ferren helped secure the victory with a key
steal as the fourth-ranked Royals beat No. 6 Lynnville-Sully 38-34 in Class 1A
play.
Riese, a 6-foot-1 senior, finished with 19 points and 13
rebounds to help Colo-NESCO win its first game at
state since 2002, when the Royals took second in Class 2A. Shayla
Dean added seven points and five assists for the Royals, who advance to
Wednesday night's semifinals with a 24-1 record.
Lynnville-Sully, a three-time state
champion, got 11 points and eight rebounds from Lysandra
James. Cassie Cullen added eight points and nine rebounds for the Hawks, who
finish 21-4.
Lynnville-Sully
rallied twice in the second half after it appeared that Colo-NESCO
had taken control of the game.
The
Hawks ran off 10 straight points to take a 23-22 lead at the end of the third
quarter, then came back again after Riese scored from
the low block to put Colo-NESCO up 32-25.
Madison Rasmussen hit a pair of
3-pointers and Becca Vos
made one to produce a tie at 34 with 2:36 left. But the Hawks couldn't get the
lead.
Colo-NESCO got the ball to Riese
and she responded, making a free throw and then getting a bucket inside for a
37-34 lead with 1:23 remaining.
Lynnville-Sully had a chance to
tie it at the end, but Ferren stole an inbounds pass
with 9 seconds remaining and Dean made a free throw to finish it off.
