Two clutch 3-pointers sent Dowling Catholic into
the Class 5A semifinals.
Ashley Faber sent the game into overtime with a
3-pointer at the buzzer and Kaitlyn Mauk drained a tie-breaking 3 in the extra session to lift
the eighth-ranked Maroons past No. 4 Des Moines East 47-41.
Dowling appeared to be finished when Faber's
3-point shot rattled out with 12 seconds left and the Maroons trailing 37-34.
But she got another chance when East missed the front end of a one-and-one free
throw opportunity and made it count.
Faber,
a sophomore, led Dowling with 21 points and 10 rebounds. She finished 7-for-11
from the field and added two assists and a block. Alyssa Beck scored 11 points,
freshman Becca Hittner
scored six and Luci Sarcone
grabbed 11 rebounds to go with four points and three assists.
Roichelle Marble led East with 13 points, Shareece Burrell added nine points and 10 rebounds and Tal Neilly scored seven.
A
key for Dowling was taking better care of the ball against East's quick, harrassing defense in the second half. The Maroons turned
it over 11 times in the opening half, leading to 13 points for East, but had
only four more turnovers the rest of the way.
East
led by as many as 11 points in the second half before the Maroons clawed back.
They twice got to within two points and then drew to 35-34 on Faber's free
throw with 55.1 seconds left.
The
Scarlets appeared to be in good shape when Neilly swished two free throws to produce a 37-34 lead with
29.5 seconds remaining. But the later missed free throw and Faber's big shot
kept the Maroons alive.
Dowling
will take a 20-4 record into a semifinal game at 11:45 a.m. Friday. East, which
made it to state for the third time in four seasons, finished 21-3.
