Reserve Victoria Bricker led a fourth quarter
rally that sent seventh-ranked Southeast Polk to the Class 5A semifinals.
The Rams got 18 points from Drake recruit Caitlin
Ingle and nine each from Bricker and Annie Penquite
in beating No. 5 Muscatine 48-45.
Southeast
Polk's late surge capped an intense, back-and-forth game between two
aggressive, well-coached teams and resulted in the Rams reaching the state
semifinals for the second straight year.
They'll play No. 2 Ankeny at 10 a.m. Friday, the third meeting between
the two rivals this season. They split the regular-season games and Southeast
Polk is the only team that has defeated Ankeny in the Hawkettes'
last 19 games.
Southeast
Polk built a 10-point lead in the first half behind Ingle, who was able to
drive into the lane for short jumpers or turnaround shots. Muscatine stayed
close by getting to the free throw line and took a 39-35 lead into the final
quarter after Leti Lerma
hit a 3-pointer near the end of the third quarter.
The Rams recovered quickly, starting the fourth
quarter with a 10-2 run that put them ahead to stay. Bricker hit a free throw
and followed that by scoring twice on slick moves around her defender in the
low post. Then, with her team clinging to a 46-45 lead, Bricker made two free
throws with 11.9 seconds left for the final points.
Lerma, who'll play at Bradley next season, led
Muscatine with 17 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Emily Clemens added 15
points and four assists for the Muskies, who finished
20-4 in their first state tournament trip in 10 years.
