Ankeny's combination of guards Madi Robson and Brittany Hedrick and center Jaali Winters was too much for Cedar Rapids Washington.

Each contributed in a big way as the second-ranked Hawkettes beat the Warriors 66-58 to advance to the semifinals in the first Class 5A tournament.

Hedrick hit seven of nine shots, sank all eight of her free throws and scored 24 points. Winters, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, scored 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked seven shots. She also shot 7-for-9 from the field.

Robson ran the show and finished with 14 points and nine assists. With the ball in her hands almost constantly, she committed just one turnover.

Ankeny, in the state tournament for a record 26th time, improved to 20-4 and will continue its quest for a 10th state championship in a semifinal game at 10 a.m. Friday. The Hawkettes shot 60 percent in the second half and 56 percent for the game.

A pair of juniors, Aleena Hobbs and Danielle Franklin, led Washington, Hobbs putting up 21 points and Franklin 15. They combined to make 14 of 21 shots. Abby Herb also scored 15 for the Warriors, making 11 of 12 free throws.

After Ankeny built a 32-24 halftime lead, Hedrick, Winters and Robson scored all but four of the Hawkettes' points in the second half. And Robson and Winters had a hand in the two other baskets. Robson fed freshman Tash Vipond for a bucket in the lane and Winters kept alive a ball that Gabby Heimbrecht turned into a layup.

Washington cut the lead to 37-34 when Hobbs drove for a basket midway through the third quarter. But the Hawkettes had an answer. Hedrick and Robson each drove for a basket and Hedrick hit a jumper to make it 43-34. When Washington clawed back to a five-point deficit, Winters scored inside and Hedrick buried a 3-pointer to put Ankeny up 50-41 heading into the fourth quarter.

That cushion proved enough for the Hawkettes to get their 18th victory in the last 19 games.

Washington, which made its 12th appearance at state, finished 17-7.
