Top-ranked Bishop Heelan of Sioux City is off to a good start in the Class 4A tournament.

The Crusaders got strong games from Megan McCarthy and MaKayla Augustine in rolling past Dubuque Wahlert 63-47 to advance to the semifinal round.

McCarthy scored 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting and showed some versatility in knocking down two 3-pointers and a medium range jumper while also working under the basket. She led her team with seven rebounds.

Augustine scored 14 points and had six of the Crusaders' 19 steals. Jenna Bork added nine points and five steals.

Ana Schmitt led Wahlert with 14 points and Marissa Cody scored 11, making five of six shots. Olivia Smith grabbed 10 rebounds for the Golden Eagles and scored five points.

Heelan led from the start and often scored quickly in transition. The Crusaders finished with 12 fastbreak points to none for Wahlert.

Wahlert made a run in the third quarter, drawing to 38-35 on two straight baskets by Schmitt and a bucket inside by Tori Ochs. But Augustine countered with back-to-back 3-pointers, triggering a 10-2 run that stretched the lead to 48-37. Heelan stayed comfortably ahead the rest of the way.

Heelan, in the tournament for the fifth time since 2008, will take a 13-game winning streak and a 21-3 record into a semifinal game against Cedar Rapids Xavier at 8:30 p.m. Thursday.

Wahlert, tested all season by a schedule made up mostly of Class 5A schools, finished 10-14.
