Defense did it again for Cascade.
Fourth-ranked Cascade held No. 5
Bondurant-Farrar to one field goal over the final three quarters with its
suffocating 2-3 zone and beat the Lady Jays 33-26 to advance to the Class 3A
semifinals.
It was typical of what the
Cougars have done all season. They entered the state tournament giving up only
27.8 points a game and haven't allowed any opponent to score more than 38.
Bondurant-Farrar was on pace to
top that figure when it knocked down four shots, including a pair of
3-pointers, in building a 13-6 first quarter lead. But the Lady Jays did not
make another basket until Lexi Atzen swished a 3-pointer with 7 seconds left.
Cascade improved to 23-2 and will
meet top-ranked and defending state champion Davenport Assumption in a
semifinal game at 3:15 Thursday afternoon.
Bondurant-Farrar played solid
defense of its own and the game was tied at 18 early in the fourth quarter.
Cascade then hit two quick baskets to get the cushion it needed.
Aspen Lynch found Elle Hoffman
cutting to the basket for a layup and Brianna Hostert followed with a 3-pointer
50 seconds later, making it 23-18 with 4:18 left. Cascade had been 0-for-6 from
long range before Hostert connected. The Cougars then closed out their victory
by making free throws.
Abby Meyer led Cascade with nine
points, all on free throws. Hostert added seven points and Carolyn Trumm scored
five.
Atzen scored 12 points to lead
Bondurant-Farrar, which made the tournament for the second straight year
despite having just one senior. Ashley Burrows had eight points and eight
rebounds for the Lady Jays, who finished 17-7.
