Burlington Notre Dame enjoyed a successful state
tournament debut.
Taylor Hickey scored 17 points and fifth-ranked
Notre Dame, playing in the tournament for the first time, pulled away late in
the first half en route to a 60-43 victory over No. 7 Colo-Nesco
in a Class 1A game.
Riley Kilbride added 12
points for the Nikes, who will take a 22-3 record into a semifinal game at 10
a.m. Thursday. The 22 victories are a school record.
Notre Dame jumped to an early nine-point lead
before Colo-Nesco rallied with a 9-2 run to chop the
deficit to 21-19 midway through the second quarter. But the Royals would get no
closer.
The Nikes answered with a 16-4 run to open a
37-23 halftime lead and they were in control the rest of the way. Hickey helped
finish that burst by scoring on a drive and knocking down two 3-pointers in the
final 2 minutes of the half.
Hickey and Kilbridge
helped Notre Dame survive a subpar shooting game by leading scorer Morgan
Meyers, who finished with nine points. Kori Mesecher had seven points and six rebounds for the Nikes.
Haley Stoeffler led Colo-Nesco with 16 points, including four 3-pointers.
Teammate Caitlyn Riese scored seven points to go with
14 rebounds, while Madison Farren had 12 rebounds and
eight points.
Colo-Nesco, in the tournament for the seventh time,
finished 23-3.
