2011 Iowa Girls State Basketball
Tournament
Class 4A First Round
Iowa City West 67, Cedar Rapids
Washington 58
Third-ranked Iowa City
West rode a sizzling start to the fourth quarter into the Class 4A semifinals.
West got 19 points from
sophomore Ally Disterhoft and 16 from junior Jessica Shull in beating
sixth-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington 67-58. The Women of Troy did it with a
two-minute burst that built a lead the Warriors couldn't overcome.
Trailing 45-39 heading
into the fourth quarter, West hit Washington with a 14-2 run that included
3-pointers by Disterhoft, Shull and McKenzie Piper. Disterhoft followed Piper's
3 with a driving lineup and Shahana Williams made a free throw, giving West a
53-47 lead.
Tia Dawson, who had an
outstanding game for Washington, stopped West's momentum with a 3-pointer from
the top of the key, but the Warriors couldn't string together a run of their
own to retake the lead.
They got it down to
59-58 when Ashley Piper sank two free throws after grabbing an offensive
rebound. But Shull swished two free throws and Disterhoft made six in a row from
the line to nail down West's second victory of the season over Washington. The
Women of Troy beat the Warriors 65-50 midway through the regular season.
West shot 55 percent in
the second half, including 6-for-10 from 3-point range.
Dawson, a 6-foot-2
senior who'll play at Dartmouth next season, scored 27 points on 12-for-18
shooting, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked three shots. Piper added 12 points
and eight rebounds for Washington, which finishes 19-4.
Piper finished with nine
points for West, which has only three seniors and starts five underclassmen.
The Women of Troy take a 22-2 record into a semifinal game at noon Friday.
