2011 Iowa Girls State Basketball Tournament

Class 3A First Round

Central DeWitt 47, MOC-Floyd Valley 37

Sixth-ranked Central DeWitt overcame an injury to star guard Lindsay Smith to post a first-round victory in Class 3A play.

Jen Keitel and Niki Green scored 17 points each as the Sabers handed third-ranked MOC-Floyd Valley its first loss and advanced to the semifinals with a 47-37 victory.

Smith, who has signed with Wisconsin, injured her left knee with 2:58 left in the first half. She was helped to the locker room and watched the second half from behind the bench, her left leg stretched out and cushioned by pillow.

Central DeWitt trailed 14-12 at the time and fell behind 17-14 when MOC-Floyd Valley's Kara Nonnemacher hit a 3-pointer. But Keitel answered with a 3 and that started a 14-0 run which spanned halftime and lifted the Sabers into a 28-17 lead.

They were in control the rest of the way and made 11 of 14 free throws in the final 3:08 to remain safely ahead.

The 6-foot-2 Keitel, a Northern Iowa recruit, dominated inside. She made seven of 10 shots, grabbed 15 rebounds, blocked six shots and made three steals.

Green, who came in averaging 3.2 points, had to pick up her game after Smith went out and did just that. The 5-6 senior made four of her five shots from the field and went 9-for-10 at the free throw line.

Central DeWitt is now 24-2 and will play again at 7:45 p.m. Thursday.

MOC-Floyd Valley finishes 25-1. Nonnemacher led the Lady Dutch with 12 points, while Jessica Locker had 10 points and nine rebounds.
