2011 Iowa Girls State Basketball
Tournament
Class 3A First Round
Davenport Assumption 67, Sergeant
Bluff-Luton 60
With its long-range
accuracy and free-throw shooting, Davenport Assumption
found a winning combination.
Danielle Moore scored 25
points and Melissa Youngblut made all four of her
3-point shots while scoring 20 as fourth-ranked Assumption beat No. 5 Sergeant
Bluff-Luton 67-60 in the opening game of the Class 3A
tournament.
Kate Fennelly
added 10 points for the Knights, including a 3-pointer in the final minute of
the third quarter that put her team ahead to stay. The victory came on Youngblut's 18th birthday.
Sergeant Bluff-Luton,
which made it to state for the first time, got 24 points and 14 rebounds from
Betsy Thomas and stayed in it to the end.
Fennelly's
3-pointer from the left corner gave Assumption a 43-40 lead heading into the
fourth quarter. The Knights bumped their lead to seven, then
countered every time Sergeant Bluff-Luton threatened.
The Warriors drew to 54-53 on Emily Wisecup's 3-pointer with 3:11 left, but could get no
closer. Assumption wrapped up the victory by making 13 of 17 free throws in the
final 3:02. Moore, a sophomore, went 7-for-8 during that stretch and finished
11 of 14 from the line. She made seven of her nine shots from the field, most on drives to the basket.
Assumption is in the tournament for the
seventh time in the last eight seasons and has done it under first-year coach
Jennifer Goetz, who was inducted into the IGHSAU Hall of Fame last year.
The Knights are now 23-2
and will play a semifinal game at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Cassidy Breon
added 15 points for Sergeant Bluff-Luton and Wisecup scored 12. The Warriors, who had just two seniors,
set a school record for victories and finish 23-3.
