2011 Iowa Girls State Basketball
Tournament
Class 1A First Round
Marquette Catholic 34, North
Mahaska 32
Sarah Lampe scored seven
points for Bellevue Marquette Catholic in her team's first-round Class 1A state
tournament game -- and they came at just the right time.
Lampe drove for a
basket, hit a 3-pointer and sank two free throws during a six-minute span in
the fourth quarter to help Marquette hold off sixth-ranked North Mahaska for a
34-32 victory.
The 5-foot-5 sophomore
came through after North Mahaska had taken a 26-25 lead on Hannah Ferguson's
jumper in the first minute of the fourth quarter. Her driving bucket put the
Mohawks back on top and her 3-pointer stretched the lead to 30-26 with 5:38 to
go.
Marquette's Kelsey Tebbe
drove for a bucket to hike the lead to six, just enough of a cushion for the
Mohawks to hold on.
North Mahaska drew to 34-32 on
Ferguson's 3-pointer and the Warhawks had a chance in
the closing seconds, but their final shot bounced away and Marquette moved on
to the semifinals.
Lampe, Tebbe
and Paige Daugherty each scored seven to lead Marquette, which is in the
tournament for the first time since 2005. The Mohawks are now 16-6 and will
play again at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
North Mahaska, in the tournament for the
first time, came back to make it a game after getting outscored 12-1 in the
second quarter to trail 19-14.
The Warhawks
played better defense after the break, got five points in the third quarter
from Kate Ray and fought their way back.
Ray led North Mahaska with 11 points and
Ferguson scored eight. Tara Smith grabbed 10 rebounds and scored three points
for the Warhawks, who had only one senior and finish 23-3.
