Roland-Story 38, Camanche
31
After a shaky start, Roland-Story
is headed to the Class 2A semifinals.
Ninth-ranked Roland-Story turned
the ball over five times on its first six possessions and made only one shot in
the first quarter. But the Norsemen then got their game together and beat No. 4
Camanche 38-31 on Tuesday to begin Day Two of the
2010 tournament.
Maddie
Oliver, Roland-Story's 6-foot-2 junior center, posted
a double-double to lead the way, scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 rebounds. Britny Halleland added six points
for the winners, including three key free throws in the final 1:12.
Ashtyn
Dixon led Camanche with 20 points. Teammate Tiana Bark contributed seven rebounds, four points and four
steals.
Roland-Story didn't make a basket
until Oliver hit a jumper with 1:27 left in the first quarter. But the Norsemen
never trailed by more than six points and they led the entire second half after
Lindsay Hammes hit a 3-pointer just before the
halftime buzzer to put her team up 13-11.
Roland-Story led by as many as 10
before Camanche made a late run, cutting the lead to
32-31 on Dixon's long 3 with 3:31 left. But the Norsemen held the Indians
scoreless the rest of the way.
Oliver fed Kayla Nielsen for a
layup with a nice pass from the high post for a 34-31 lead and Halleland converted three of four free throws to make it
37-31 with 43.5 seconods left.
Roland-Story, a first-round loser
in last year's tournament, advances to a 1:30 p.m. semifinal game on Thursday
with a 25-1 record. Camanche, which made the tournament
for the first time snce 1998, finished 19-4.
