WAUKON 56, KEOKUK 39
Another game, another victory for
the state's active career leader.
Waukon gave coach Gene Klinge victory
No. 931 when the fourth-ranked Indians beat Keokuk 56-39 Tuesday in the opening
game of the Class 3A tournament.
Mary Halvorson led the way with
16 points and 10 rebounds and two teammates also scored in double figures as
Waukon improved to 20-2. The Indians will play in a semifinal game at 6 p.m.
Thursday.
Carissa Berger added 14 points
and eight steals for Waukon, while Kristyna Herman had 10 points and nine
rebounds.
Klinge is now 931-216 in 47 years
of coaching. He spent most of his career at West Central, then guided Waukon to
the 3A championship in 2004 -- his first season with the Indians. He needs only
eight more victories to pass R.V. Mullen as the state's all-time leader.
Shelsey Stanley led Keokuk with
11 points and McKenzie Piper scored nine. The Chiefs lost to an Iowa team for
the first time this season and finished 18-7.
Waukon often had a player heading
toward the other end when Keokuk shot and that resulted in several layups for
the Indians. They went on a 10-0 run that spanned the first and second quarters
to open a 21-6 lead and were in control the rest of the way.
A 6-0 run early in the third
quarter stretched the lead to 31-15 and Keokuk never got closer than 10 points
after that.
Waukon overcame its 28 turnovers
by shooting 48.6 percent and outrebounding Keokuk 39-32. The Indians held
Keokuk to four field goals in the first half.
