AGWSR 47, GEORGE-LITTLE ROCK 40
AGSWR will have a chance to fashion a perfect ending
to what so far has been a perfect season.
Jessica McDowell scored 15 points and third-ranked
AGWSR put the game away with its free throw shooting down the stretch, beating
No. 10 George-Little Rock 47-40 Wednesday night to reach the Class 1A
championship game.
It will be the first appearance in the title game for
the AGSWR program, a combination of Ackley, Geneva, Wellsburg and Steamboat
Rock. Both Wellsburg and Steamboat both have won six-player championships.
AGSWR is now 24-0 and will play for the title at 6 p.m.
Friday. But the Cougars had to fend off a gritty George-Little Rock team to
earn their shot at the championship.
Down by 10 points early in the fourth quarter,
George-Little Rock hit three straight 3-pointers to get back in it and pulled
ahead 37-36 on Patrice Peters' driving layup with 3:47 left.
Megan Pieters hit two free throws for AGWSR to put the
Cougars back on top and they led the rest of the way. McDowell scored on a
putback to put the Cougars up by three and they made seven of eight free throws
to finish it off.
McDowell also grabbed 11 rebounds and hit three
3-pointers. Macy Ubben added 10 points for AGWSR, while Kelsey Enslin and
Cassidy Ringena each scored eight.
Peters went 6-for-9 from 3-point range and led
George-Little Rock with 20 points. Kelli Starr scored seven for the Mustangs,
while Shelby Nagel grabbed 11 rebounds.
George-Little Rock finished 23-4.
