GEORGE-LITTLE ROCK 65, MASON CITY NEWMAN CATHOLIC 53

A fast start sent George-Little Rock into the Class 1A semifinals.

Shelby Nagel had a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds and the 10th-ranked Mustangs led from the start in beating Mason City Newman Catholic 65-53 on Monday.

George-Little Rock jumped to a 17-6 lead in the first quarter and turned back Newman every time the Knights threatened.

Nagel slipped behind the Newman defense several times to get easy layups and finished 12-for-16 from the field. Patrice Peters added 13 points and eight assists for the Mustangs, who had good ball movement on offense and ended up with assists on 16 of their 28 baskets.

George-Litte Rock also got a solid game from Abbie Voss, who had nine points, six rebounds, five steals and four assists.

Holly Hinderman led Newman with 21 points, Olivia Olson scored nine and Morgan Dornbier eight.

Newman used a 9-1 run midway through the opening half to cut the lead to 18-15. But Peters hit a 3-pointer to blunt the comeback and the Knights never got that close again.

George-Little Rock led by as many as 13 in the second half before Newman closed to 60-53 on Hinderman's free throw with 49 seconds left. The Mustangs then scored the final five points to finish it off, Peters capping the victory with a steal and layup.

   George-Little Rock takes a 23-3 record into a 6:30 p.m. game Wednesday against third-ranked AGWSR. Newman finishes 19-5.
