It was all perfect for Davenport
Assumption.
Assumption became the first
Davenport school to win a state championship in girls basketball and the
top-ranked Knights did it convincingly, beating No. 2 MFL-Mar-Mac 46-27 Friday
night to claim the Class 2A title and finish 27-0.
The 19-point victory margin in
the final came after the Knights won by 18 in the semifinals and 19 in the
first round. Their closest game all season was a 41-30 victory over Pleasant
Valley.
As usual, Assumption had good
balance in its scoring. Lauren Lybbert, who'll play at Army next season, led
the way with 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting. She also grabbed seven rebounds and
blocked two shots.
Annie Smith scored eight for the
Knights and made a couple of steals, while Gabbie Binion and Alyson
Spinas-Valainis each scored six points.
Lybbert was voted captain of the
all-tournament team.
The title was the third for
Assumption coach Todd Borrison, who won Class 1A championships with Preston in
2000 and 2001.
MFL-Mar-Mac lost for the first
time in 28 games. The Bulldogs had the smaller team but stayed with Assumption
on the boards most of the night. They just couldn't get enough shots to fall.
Kellie Wagner led MFL-Mar-Mac
with nine points. Melissa Moon scored five and Chelsey Lamker grabbed six
rebounds to go with four points and three assists.
Assumption jumped to a 10-2 lead
and was seriously threatened only once. MFL-Mar-Mac drew to 14-10 on Moon's
3-pointer in the second quarter, but Assumption answered with a 14-3 run
spanning halftime to open a 28-13 lead midway through the second half.
The Knights led by at least 13
the rest of the way.
Smith also made the
all-tournament team, along with Emily Blietz and Whitney Wubbena of
MFL-Mar-Mac, Mika Rodewald of Manson-Northwest Webster and Terri Dirks of
Monticello.
