It'll be No. 1 vs. 2, unbeaten against unbeaten.

Top-ranked Davenport Assumption completed a perfect pairing for the Class 2A championship game with a 65-47 semifinal victory over Monticello in Thursday's semifinals.

The Knights will take a 26-0 record against No. 2 MFL-Mar-Mac, which is 27-0 after beating Manson-Northwest Webster 51-43. The winner of Friday's 7:30 p.m. title game will become a state champion for the first time.

Assumption came into the state tournament with an average victory magin of 36 points and the Knights have continued to win impressively. They beat Unity Christian 63-44 in the opening round and used their size to overpower Monticello (23-4).

The Knights have three players taller than anyone Monticello could put on the floor and it showed. Assumption outscored the Panthers 34-12 in the paint and grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, which led to 19 second-chance points.

Annie Smith, a 6-foot-2 senior, led Assumption with 19 points, while 6-1 Lauren Lybbert added 17 points and eight rebounds, six on the offensive glass. Alyson Spinas-Valainis, a 6-2 junor who comes off the bench, added 12 points for the Knights.

Amber Ralston led Monticello with 12 points. Terri Dirks added 11, while Megan McLaughlin had 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Monticello stayed with its taller opponent for awhile and led 14-11 after one quarter. But that lead vanished quickly once Assumption established its dominance on the boards.

The Knights outscored Monticello 24-5 in the second quarter to open a 35-19 lead. During one stretch in the second quarter, Assumption scored five straight baskets on putbacks and Lybbert sank two free throws after she was fouled on a putback attempt.

Monticello never challenged in the second half and had a 14-game winning streak broken. This was the second consecutive state tournament trip for the Panthers, who lost in the first round last year.
