The first day of the state tournament ended with an upset.

 

    Eleventh-ranked Manson-Northwest Webster held No. 3 AGWSR to one basket in the fourth quarter and pulled out a 36-33 victory in Class 2A action.

 

    The underdog Cougars trailed by 11 points in the first quarter and were behind most of the game, but played tough defense when it counted and ended AGWSR's perfect season. Manson-Northwest Webster held AGWSR (24-1) without a field goal for more than 10 minutes in the first half and kept AGWSR scoreless over the final 7:22.

 

    Manson-Northwest Webster (25-2) tied the score at 35 on Mika Rodewald's two free throws with 3:50 to play. Teammate Kesley Sukovaty's free throw put the Manson-Northwest Webster ahead to stay at 34-33 and Kristen Twait scored on a putback with 2:12 remaining for a three-point lead and that turned out to be the game's final points.

 

    Rodewald led Manson-Northwest Webster with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Sukovaty finished with nine points and seven rebounds.

 

    Laura Boheman led AGWSR with 17 points and Jessica McDowell scored 13 to go with nine rebounds. AGWSR took a 33-31 lead on Boheman's 3-pointer in the opening minute of the fourth quarter but did not score again.

 

    Boheman hit three early 3-pointers and converted a layup after a steal as AGWSR jumped to a 15-4 lead at the 2:10 mark in the first quarter. Manson-Northwest Webster then held AGWSR without a field goal the rest of the half and fought its way back into the game.
