Top-ranked Dunkerton survived a scare in the first
round of Class 1A play.
Kayla Waskow scored 31 points and
Dunkerton held off WCLT in the final minute for a 70-68 victory that kept the
Raiders unbeaten.
They fell short of their state-leading 82.9 scoring
average, but still had just enough to move into Wednesday night's semifinals
against Newell-Fonda. Sarah Waskow added 11 points for Dunkerton (25-0), which
is in the state tournament for the first time.
All five WCLT starters scored in double figures, led
by Stacey Schutjer's 16 points. Schutjer also grabbed 22 rebounds, two short of
the tournament record she set last year, and blocked nine shots to match the
fourth-highest figure in a state tourney game.
Alyssa Schwartz scored 14 points for the Tigers
(22-4), Paige Heesch had 13, Michelle Eden 12 and Melanie Hofmann 11.
The game was played at a frenetic pace and the two
teams combined to put up 131 shots. Dunkerton offset WCLT's 52-40 rebounding
advantage by making 19 steals. Danielle Graham had seven of those steals and
intercepted WCLT's inbounds pass with less than a second to play to end the
Tigers' final hopes.
Dunkerton led 44-41 after a back-and-forth first half.
The lead then changed hands three more times before Dunkerton ran off seven
straight points to go ahead for good at 63-58. Kayla Waskow finished the run by
making a basket as she was knocked to the floor, then sinking the free throw to
complete a three-point play.
Her two free throws with 16.5 seconds left gave
Dunkerton a 70-66 lead. Heesch scored inside for WCLT to make it a two-point
game and the Tigers got one last chance when Dunkerton threw the ball away with
four-tenths of a second remaining.
But Graham picked off the inbounds pass to end it.
